The starting point
Orkisima is the home community of Lalahe and Lazaro, Lalahe's father lives here. Before 2019, the region had neither its own school nor reliable drinking water.
The idea & the people
Orkisima was the school where Lalahe and Lazaro started in their own region. Trust was there from the beginning, the family knows the village, the village knows the family. We joined in 2019.
The way
First the well, then the school. In 2020, the first Makuyuni well was established, two years before the handover of the school. Because without water no school routine. Then block by block, until 2022 when the state took over.
The result
403 children learn in Orkisima, seven to ten teachers work at the school. Seven classrooms, one teacher's house, one toilet house, a private water tap at the school. In addition, a well that supplies 3,200 people of the community with clean drinking water according to WHO criteria.
Status & outlook
Since the handover in 2022, the state pays teacher salaries and operations, the community takes care of maintenance. The 2020 well continues to operate, the school grows. Orkisima shows how water and education together achieve more than any project alone.

Well + school, in this order.
Here you can see where the €187,990.78 was invested. Water supply, classrooms, teachers' house, and toilets. The Bücherbörse Köln co-financed the construction, Orkisima was the first school we tackled together.
